The Joy of GPS

A few weeks back my friend Mike (of 4×4 trip fame) bought a fancy new GPS. Consequently, he made me a great deal on his old one. Last weekend, Renee and I made great use of it mapping our run down the Venice beach bike path — it told us our speed, amount of time stopped and running, altitude, and at the end I could upload the data on the computer and have a detailed look. It showed EVERYTHING, down to the few steps off to the side we took for “biobreaks”.

After that, I decided to invest in a handlebar mount and the MetroGuide Europe software. Yes, we’re taking it to Italy. I already have our route planned out, and pretty much every road we needed was in the map, including most of the hotels where we booked. So far i’m pretty impressed. Guess we’ll see how well it works in the field.
